SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Anthropic, an artificial intelligence firm, is seeking a temporary injunction from a federal judge to stop the Pentagon’s “unprecedented and stigmatizing” classification of the company as a supply chain risk.

A hearing set for Tuesday in a California federal court represents a vital moment in the ongoing dispute between Anthropic and the Trump administration concerning the military applications of its AI technology.

This month, Anthropic initiated legal action to prevent the Trump administration from executing what the company describes as an “unlawful campaign of retaliation” due to its refusal to permit unrestricted military access to its technology.

The firm is requesting that U.S. District Judge Rita Lin issue an emergency order to reverse the Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic as a “supply chain risk.” They also aim to overturn President Donald Trump’s directive that prohibits all federal employees, not just those in the military, from using its AI chatbot, Claude.

Judge Lin is overseeing the case in federal court in San Francisco, where Anthropic is based. Additionally, the company has filed a separate, narrower case in the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C.

Lin has posed multiple questions to both parties for the Tuesday hearing, including inquiries regarding inconsistencies between Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s formal statement labeling Anthropic as a potential national security threat and his comments on social media.
