(Reuters) – Spotify (SPOT.N) has introduced a new feature called “prompted playlist” in the U.S. and Canada, allowing premium users to customize playlists by leveraging their listening habits and specific commands.

This rollout follows a successful trial in New Zealand and is part of Spotify’s ongoing efforts to enhance its AI capabilities, aiming to convert more users from the free tier to paid subscriptions.

“Listeners want to actively shape their experience on Spotify, rather than simply being understood,” stated Vice President of Product Personalization Molly Holder during a media briefing.

The new feature positions users as active contributors who can instruct the algorithm with their own words and preferences, rather than passively receiving recommendations.

In contrast to earlier features like the AI playlist, the prompted playlist allows users to establish “rules” for content generation, and it can refresh either daily or weekly to keep the music selection up-to-date, according to the company.

This expansion follows Spotify’s recent announcement that it will raise the price of its monthly premium subscription from $11.99 to $12.99 in the U.S., Estonia, and Latvia starting in February.
