Rafael Devers of the Boston Red Sox has rejected the front office’s request for him to play first base following Triston Casas’s season-ending injury. Devers has previously faced drama this season after transitioning from third base to designated hitter, where he initially struggled but eventually found his rhythm. Despite his recent success as a DH, the team’s plan for him to fill in at first base after Casas’s injury has not been well received. Devers expressed that it is unreasonable for the team to expect him to play multiple positions, especially after being told to focus solely on DH.
His refusal has drawn criticism from MLB YouTuber Fuzzy on X (formerly Twitter), who accused Devers of being overly dramatic about the situation. Fuzzy suggested that playing first base is not as complicated as Devers and his supporters portray and urged him to step up in light of his teammate’s injury. With Devers unwilling to make the switch, the Red Sox may need to explore other internal options, such as Kristian Campbell, Romy Gonzalez, or Abraham Toro, or possibly seek external solutions via trade or free agency.
